As part of Reaction Compassion’s In Case Anything Happens, I Love You Series, we’ve created this kid-friendly guide to answer the question, “What do I do when there’s a home fire?”
Stay Calm & Cool
- Fires may be hot, but you know how to stay cool.
- Escape danger easily, like a junior firefighter!
Home Fire: A fire that spreads quickly in your house.
During a Home Fire
- BEEP-BEEP-BEEP = smoke!
- Microwave/Oven Fires: If safe, turn off the microwave and keep the door closed. Escape to safety, and immediately tell a trusted adult or call for 911.
- Electrical Fires: Call 911 and escape to safety! Only fire extinguishers or fire blankets will put out those fires. Do not use water.
- If you smell or see smoke, stay low and get to your exit.
- Feel the door before opening. If its hot, find a different exit!
- Go to a safe place outside, or your household emergency meeting place in 2 minutes.
- Get out and stay out! Never go back into a burning home.
- Stuck inside? Don’t hide! Stay visible and use your voice so firefighters can help.
- Stop, drop, and roll if you catch on fire!
Did You Know? 350,000+ home fires happen in the United States each year!
Prevent Fires by Being a Safety Hero!
- Prevent harmful fires by never touching or playing with matches, stoves, fireplaces, candles, and lighters. If closeby, tell a trusted adult and keep younger kids away.
- Test all household smoke alarms every month with your family.
- Have a household emergency plan.
- Have an emergency supply kit, and know where fire extinguishers and fire blankets are.
- Practice:
- Keeping a safe distance from hot appliances in the kitchen
- Home fire escape plan, and exiting in 2 minutes
- Pretend calling 911
- Stop, drop, and roll
